Information Literacy Monitoring and evaluation toolkit for Africa

on the 16 and 17th February 2012 I was invited to attend a workshop with other representatives from some of our African countries namely Kenya, Ghana, Botswana, Ethiopia. The workshop was hosted and funded by the British Library for Development Studies (BLDS) and the Research Information Network. The aim of the two day workshop was to consult and work on a monitoring and evaluation instrument to monitor and evaluate literacy training in Africa. The main objective being  to inform the development and impact measurement of information literacy training in Africa. A draft of the developed instrument will be available in March and after extensive feedback the final instrument will be available for piloting and refinement. This final product will be a great milestone for Africa.

The BLDS had been developing an information literacy program over the past two years which includes course material and an online network for trainers and practitioners to share best practice. Most of the work done by BLDS on information literacy training was within an African context. So the idea is that this M & E toolkit will also be widely disseminated in Africa for the use of African information literacy trainers. The toolkit is intended to include practical tools such as pre and post course questionnaires, as well as case studies illustrating how these tools can be used.
